A Ladies Briefcase Shopping Guide

Posted under Ladies Luggage and Bags, Leather Briefcases, Leather Luggage Buying Guide.

Introduction:
Welcome to our ladies briefcase shopping guide. We have read some articles out there on “why buying a ladies briefcase will give you style, sophistication, and the ability to compete with men in workforce” type information – frankly, we are not sure we agree with it (sounds kind of dated for the 21st century) but it does not matter. We assume you want a ladies briefcase (or plan on giving one as a gift) but could use a few pointers before making your selection.

Types of Ladies Briefcases:
With manufacturers going full force in terms of styles, colors, and functionality, there are almost too many different briefcases to choose from. However, in general, you will probably end up choosing from these styles:

Ladies Briefcase Classic

Classic – shown to the right is a classic style leather womens briefcase. By classic we mean it looks closer to the original men’s type briefcase but more to women’s tastes and standards – rounded edges, sleeker handles, etc. These are going to be the most functional by far – you can fit almost any laptop plus other files and belongings quite easily. In fact, these are more like a ladies laptop briefcase. However, some women may find a classic style to large and/or bulky.

Ladies Briefcase Hybrid

Hybrid - the hybrid style here is by far the most popular type of ladies leather briefcase. While it is functional enough to hold a small to medium sized laptop, files, and personal belongings, it is not terribly large and feels more like a purse or handbag. These types can still be heavier, but are a great choice for many women.

Ladies Briefcase Purse

Purse – the purse style briefcase is the other end of the spectrum. These bags are only slightly larger than a typical ladies handbag, yet can fit a small laptop or netbook as well as other personals. These are great for women who only occasionally need to tote their computer or folder files around – it can double as their normal purse.

Note there are newer “roller” type ladies briefcase bags (specifically, McKleinUSA offers a very popular Willowbrook Leather Detachable model), but those are few and far between. The women that do buy them really enjoy this type of briefcase.

Considerations Before You Buy:
We feel the two most important considerations are style and function. Overall, you have to pick a briefcase that you enjoy toting around – there’s nothing worse than carrying a bag (regardless of function) that other women may snicker at or is just plain ugly. I’m sure you have received that purse as a gift and it went straight to the donation box. Also, be clear on what functionally is most important. This may even override style in some cases. For example, if you always need to carry a medium sized laptop (under 16″), you only can consider the hybrid or classic/laptop style ladies totes. Similarly, if you need a bag that can be carried over your shoulder, limit your choices to those models with longer straps. Finally, consider weight. A common complaint (or at least note) from women is that a ladies briefcase was heavy – keep that in mind if you do a lot of traveling. While we recommend leather for durability, you can find lighter materials.

Where to Shop:
If you have read our other articles, we are big fans of buying online, especially for any type of leather luggage bag. However, we also recommend inspecting your merchandise before buying, especially if you are buying leather. While there are plenty of lady briefcase manufacturers, many popular brands (e.g. McKleinUSA, MobileEdge, etc.) and models are available in retailers for you to touch and feel. Online, Amazon and eBags usually have great deals. Overstock.com sometimes has closeouts out ladies briefcases if you look for them. In general, expect to spend $100 – $200 for a decent ladies briefcase – more for top grain leather within luxury brands.

Summary:
To summarize, know the look and color you are willing to accept then be sure of the functional needs. Are you carrying a laptop? If so, is it a big or small laptop? How many other items do you need to tote? Is weight a concern? Make a list and do not overlook these things. In the majority of cases, women go for the hybrid style since it has the look and feel (albeit slightly heavier) of a purse with the functionality of a smaller briefcase. Overall, we recommend the hybrid style ladies briefcases as well because while they meet our needs, they still retain a stylish look.
