Tips on Buying Leather Luggage

Posted under Leather Luggage Buying Guide, Leather Luggage Types.

Introduction:
Leather luggage has always been very popular with people worldwide.  It should be popular - a quality leather luggage set can last a lifetime with the proper care.  Leather luggage is very durable while also pliable.  Finally, there is the element of luxury and pride of ownership that drives people to buy leather luggage.

This article will provide some good information and tips for those of you looking to buy leather luggage (or any type of leather bag).  We hope you find it useful.

Types of Leather:

First, it helps to have a general overview of the types of leather  available.  In most cases, you will see:

  • Full Grain Leather – made from the outer layer of the hide, left natural.  It is the most durable leather, but also the most expensive.
  • Top Grain Leather – as the name implies, top grain refers to the surface layer of the hide; one side is processed and sanded.  Top grain leather is the soft and supple while also being very durable and resistant to tearing; it is ideal for leather luggage.
  • Split Grain Leather – this is from the inner most layer of the hide. While it is one piece (so better than bonded leather from a durability perspective), the inner hide has looser fibers so it is not a strong as Top Grain Leather.  It may be referred to as “Genuine Leather”.
  • Bonded Leather – this is lowest grade of leather though is often labeled as “Genuine Leather” as well.  Bonded leather is basically fragments of leather mixed with a bonding agent and other material (i.e. glue).  It will look and feel like regular leather but does not have the same durability and strength.

There is also suede, which is a finish and process applied to leather to produce a specific texture.  Finally, there is “man-made leather” which is not real leather, but a composition of materials like fabric, rubber, and/or other plastics.  It is obviously not as durable, but looks and feels real at a much cheaper price.

Whether you are purchasing a leather messenger bag, briefcase, or a leather holdall, our recommendation is to go with full grain or top grain leather if you can afford it.  The luggage will be quite expensive anyway, because the leather pieces need to be large.

Quality of Leather:

You should inspect the luggage closely if possible, specifically looking at the stitching and craftsmanship.  You do not need a trained eye to spot uneven stitches, loose threads, or glue streaks.  Stitching should be consistent.

If possible, determine which type of animal the leather came from – in terms of highest to lowest quality:  cow, sheep, goat, and pig (football!).  Leather luggage should usually be cowhide due to the size.

Other Considerations:

While not unique to leather luggage, here are some other things to look at.  Try all zippers and other hardware.  For wheeled luggage, roll it around as well.  Test it as much as you can from a functional perspective.  Also, is it aesthetically pleasing to you – does it look good?

Summary:

Ultimately, it is a purchase so price will be a factor.  If you want ultimate durability due to frequent use, or money is not a factor, then Full Grain Leather is the way to go.  Otherwise, we recommend going with Top Grain Leather for luggage – it is still fairly durable with a luxurious look.  Happy hunting!
